H-LEAF Project

New technology for green hydrogen generation.

H-Leaf-en 1 - Lean Hydrogen

Development of a PEM electrolyser

The H-LEAF project develops a PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) electrolyser based on a new national patented technology.

H-LEAF focuses on the research of new scalable and sustainable components, materials, coatings and processes to overcome the current limitations in the supply of materials for hydrogen production, vital to the energy transition in Spain.

The project drives scientific research to obtain new electrode and membrane designs using scalable industrial printing techniques free of perfluorinated chemicals.

Bipolar plates

H-LEAF is developing new bipolar plates using technologies such as stamped stainless steel substrate and 3D printing with recycled titanium powder, as well as advanced corrosion protective coatings. These plates will replace existing ones, reducing costs and enabling mass production.

Hydrogen compression

In addition, the project addresses hydrogen compression using a novel piston system with advanced materials.

The final result will be an advanced demonstrator, reflecting the know-how of the consortium and achieving a TRL 6, with a power electrolyser up to 1 kW validated on a test bench. This demonstrator will allow the final characteristics of the new system and components developed to be evaluated.

Units

Lean Hydrogen participates in the H-LEAF project through four Units:

Functional Printing and
Integrated Systems

It coordinates and develops membrane electrode assemblies (MEA) and stack, formulates H-LEAF dyes for electrocatalysts and membranes and validates MEA and electrocatalyst up to 1 kW.

Technology
Chemistry

Develops a new membrane free of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Metallic
and Ceramic Materials

Develops new protective coatings for bipolar plates made by 3D printing recycled titanium powder.

Waste, Energy and Environmental Impact (WEEI)

Performs life cycle analysis of components and H-LEAF methodology.
